Katie

The majestic Katie stands tall and proud on the front lawn of FA. She represents functional art in its purest form. Our own Salvador Dali!

Katie was designed by owner Leon, and hand-crafted by Charlie- a blacksmith well known in the area for designing and building the Elgin Railway Market indoor fireplaces. Recycled pipes, fertilizer containers and an old compressor blend into her tall body.  Start a fire in her belly and watch the smoke draw up and warm her up. Come and relax next to her warm glow while enjoying the amazing view. Yellowwood cocktail tables and high chairs allows for comfortable seating without the danger of causing a runaway fire in our beautiful valley.

Nearby Attractions

Wine Farms

There are so many incredible wine farms close to Faraway Estate, it would be impossible to list all of them here, but here are some of our favorites!

Stettyn Cellar

A small team of dedicated wine farmers, guided by winemaker JM Crafford, has combined a “quality first” approach with innovative winemaking and is rapidly transforming Stettyn Cellar into a progressively marketed and sought after wine venture.

Villiersdorp Cellar

Villiersdorp, the pearl of the Overberg, is the most recent discovery of wine writers in South Africa. Exceptional wines are produced in this beautiful valley of splendour by Villiersdorp Kelder.

Aan De Doorns Wine Cellar

Situated just 8km from Worcester on the R43 to Villliersdorp, Aan de Doorns is one of the larger cellars in the Worcester region. Since its establishment in 1954, the cellar – which derives its name from the stretch of thorn trees on the banks of the nearby Doorns River – has been striving towards excellence.

Eagle’s Cliff / Arendskloof

Situated between Villiersdorp and Worcester, in the breathtakingly beautiful Breede River Valley, is the home of Eagle’s Cliff Wines. We produce a wide range of exceptional quality red and white wines, namely Arendskloof, Eagle’s Cliff, Dwyka Hills and Hoeks Rivier.

Brandvlei Cellar Wines

Brandvlei Cellar was founded in 1955 and was originally situated next to the Brandvlei Dam. When the dam was enlarged in 1974 the Cellar was relocated to its present position. The modern new Cellar can be found on the R43 road between Worcester and Villiersdorp in the beautiful Breede River Valley. The name Brandvlei, originally Brandende Vlei, has long been described as the area around the Hot Water Springs.

Franschoek Wine Tram

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a hop-on hop-off tour that takes you to some of the most beautiful and historic wine estates in the Franschhoek Valley. The tour starts and ends at the Franschhoek Terminal, and there are seven different lines to choose from, each visiting a different part of the valley.

The trams are a combination of vintage-style railway trams and open-air tram-buses, so you can enjoy the views of the vineyards and mountains from both inside and out. As you travel, you’ll hear a narration about the history of Franschhoek and the wine industry in the valley.

At each stop, you can hop off and explore the wine estate, or book a wine tasting, cellar tour, or lunch. There are also a number of other activities available, such as chocolate tasting, olive oil tasting, and boules.

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a great way to see the Franschhoek Valley and sample some of the delicious wines that the region has to offer. It’s also a great way to get around if you’re not up for walking or driving.

Here are some of the benefits of taking the Franschhoek Wine Tram:

  • You can visit a variety of different wine estates without having to worry about driving.
  • You can hop off and on as you please, so you can spend as much time as you like at each estate.
  • You’ll learn about the history of Franschhoek and the wine industry in the valley.
  • You’ll get to enjoy beautiful views of the vineyards and mountains.

If you’re looking for a fun and informative way to experience the Franschhoek Valley, the Franschhoek Wine Tram is a great option.

Elgin Railway Market

The Elgin Railway Market is within an old apple warehouse converted into a bustling Steampunk, Art Deco market boasting local food and craft vendors, live music and is the gateway to the beautiful Elgin Valley.

The original building was built in the 1940’s by Italian POW’s. The concrete tapered columns and curved box gutters bear testimony to the skill of those bygone craftsmen. It has been extensively renovated into a showpiece well worth a visit.

The Ceres Rail company with their stable of 80 year old steam trains operate a Cape Town to Elgin weekend return trip. The trains arrival is a must-see for children (and adults) as they roar in with thunderous whistling, puffing and hooting. Visitors to the market can greet the train on the station platform or view its arrival from the Market’s leisure deck overlooking the railway platform.

For more info, visit Elgin Railway Market’s website.

Whale Watching

Whales are without a doubt one of the most mysterious and beautiful creatures in the ocean, with many people traveling hundreds of miles in the hope of spotting one of these gentle creatures.

Thankfully there are 100′s of Whales to be viewed at Hermanus, South Africa, very close to land during the months of early June to late November.

With the largest number ever spotted, by Cessna light plane aerial survey, in ONE day being 196 Whales in our small Walker Bay at Hermanus, South Africa.
